THE US–CHINA TRADE DISPUTE: A MACROPERSPECTIVE

Declining global multilateralism has brought numerous trade disputes, most notably between the US and China. Here, a new model featuring monetary policy revenue reassignment are used to examine effects of this conflict macroeconomic perspective proves be important. The emergent results provide additional insight complement other “trade-focused” general equilibrium studies. We find that, with capacity adjustment, unilateral protection emerges as “beggar thy neighbor” policy. China’s proportional losses large, little mitigated by its retaliation, which nonetheless constrains net gains. Third regions trading China suffer only partly offset diversion greatly enhanced if, avoid leakage, is extended all sources.
